This was only the beginning of our encounter. By the end of the flight, in his quest for comfort in the microscopic airplane seat behind me, the 6'5" 350 pound Lester had been all over my seat. I am pretty sure in some countries we are currently considered married.
This is first time I have been to Hawaii since I started running. I remember seeing tourists running and I used to think they were idiots. Why on earth would you exercise on vacation?
I get it now.
On Sunday, I ran 9 miles. I ran from Kahana to Kapalua and back. It was an amazing run, but it started off pretty shitty. (Picture: Picture I took at the Maui Plantation Botanical Garden of a pink hibiscus!)
I had found a route online that was about 5.5 miles, but when I started running my ankles and shins were screaming so I wasn't sure I would go that far. I had to run along a narrow highway that alternated between a tiny, slanted, muddy shoulder and no shoulder at all. The cars were trying to be courteous, but there just wasn't much room.
I don't know what this pain in my shins and ankle is, but it usually goes away after 2 miles or so and Sunday was no exception. It does, however, make for a very loooong first two miles.
Once in Kapalua I was feeling pretty great. The views were gorgeous and there were intermittent showers that cooled you down without being oppressive.
So pretty it could make you cry. I wonder if they need a biology teacher on Maui?

It was then that I decided to go for 7 miles,
then I got a little lost.
Shocking. I know.
So nine miles later I was back at the hotel.

I'm so envious! I've been to Maui a few times, but never as a runner. I missed out on sooooo much by not enjoying the island that way.
Happy New Year!
It was 18 cold, windy degrees during my 'double digit' run this morning and you're complaining about running in Hawaii????!!!!! I had enough after 8, had to finish the last 2 on the treadmill. No shame, no shame!
Enjoy the rest of your trip...keep warm!!
I used to think that people who exercised on vacation were idiots too.
How far we have both come. Happy New Year to you RBR!!!!!!
Hello! I ran across your blog from comments on someone else's blog. There must be a name for that? I ran the STTS also so I thought you might be kind of local SF Bay Area.
I'll keep visiting. ;)
Happy New Year!
ohhhhh so jealous :) i LOVE hawaii! happy new year and great job on the run!!
LMAO at your and Lester's "relationship." You are a funny girl :-))
Happy New Year RBR. I hope our paths cross at some point this year.
I am so jealous. It looks beautiful! (and warm)
Hawaii sounds and looks fantastic! I stumbled upon your blog, I think I followed the link over from Steve in a Speedo. In any case, I read a few posts and then had to go back and read most of your archives. You've really made an impressive journey and are very inspiring . . . kudos to you! Like the previous poster, I too will keep on reading, and I'll keep an eye on the races you do. I live in northern cali and might run into you somewhere. We run about the same pace and seem to have more than a few things in common (loud, obnoxious potty mouth, anyone?) Anyhow, happy new year and thanks for all the blogging.
Very jealous!!!! I would have carried your bags for you to go to Hawaii!!
Lester would have annoyed the hell out of me.
I'm so jealous you're in Hawaii! I hope you have a great trip! Happy New Year!
I am positively SEETHING with jealousy!
Actually it's better to have a Lester behind you than in front, I think. I once had one in front and every time he moved or tried to recline the seat I feared the seat would break, he'd fall on me and break my legs.
But wonderful to hear you had a chance to visit Hawaii. If I see any job openings for a biology teacher, I'll let you know ;-)
